How the Step 2 CK score estimate works (NBME, UWSA and AMBOSS)
Each practice score is treated as an estimate of your exam score, with an uncertainty that depends on the exam and grows with the weeks since you took it. When you enter several scores, they are averaged, with more weight on the more certain and more recent ones. The average is deliberately given a wider range than its inputs suggest, because the same student makes related errors across different practice exams.
The result is an estimated score, an 80% range (the exam score should fall inside it about four times in five if the model is right), and the chance of scoring at or above the Step 2 CK passing standard.
What the Step 2 CK passing score is
USMLE publishes the passing standard for each Step. For Step 2 CK it is 218 for exams administered on or after July 1, 2025. USMLE reviews each standard about once every four years, so confirm the current figure on usmle.org before you plan around it.
Reading the result
A practice score is a snapshot of readiness, not a promise. Sleep, pacing, test-day stress and the questions you happen to get all move the real result. Treat the range as the answer, not the single number, and look at what your errors say about the content you should still study.
Frequently asked questions
What is the passing score for USMLE Step 2 CK?
USMLE lists 218 as the Step 2 CK passing standard for exams administered on or after July 1, 2025. Standards are reviewed about every four years, so check usmle.org for the current value.
How accurate is a Step 2 CK score predictor?
No practice-exam score is exact. This predictor shows an estimated score with an 80% range, and the range is usually wider than people expect. It is most useful for seeing whether you are clearly above the passing standard, close to it, or below it.
Which practice scores can I use?
Any practice exam that reports a three-digit score on the Step 2 CK scale: the NBME Comprehensive Clinical Science Self-Assessment (CCSSA), the UWorld Self-Assessment (UWSA), AMBOSS self-assessments, or another exam. Use the score printed on the score report, not your percent correct.
Why do older practice scores count for less?
Your preparation changes over time. A score from many weeks ago says less about how you would score today, so the model widens its uncertainty by the age of the score and gives that score less weight when you combine several.
Does this calculator save my scores?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. The scores you type are not sent to USMLE WEB, stored or logged.
How is this different from the probability on my NBME score report?
NBME's CCSSA score report includes NBME's own estimated probability of passing Step 2 CK, with a note that it is not a guarantee. This tool is independent: it can combine several exams, adjusts for how old each score is, and lists its assumptions. For a single NBME form, treat NBME's own estimate as the primary source and this as a second opinion.
What is a good NBME score for Step 2 CK?
It depends on your goal. The passing standard is 218, so a score near it is borderline and a score well above it is safer. Whether a score is good enough for a particular specialty is a separate question; look at your target programs and talk to an advisor.
Can I use shelf or subject exam scores?
No. Subject exams such as the Clinical Mastery Series measure one subject, not the whole of Step 2 CK, so this tool does not convert them. Use scores from full-length practice exams that report a three-digit Step 2 CK score.
Is this tool from NBME, UWorld or USMLE?
No. USMLE WEB is independent and is not affiliated with USMLE, NBME, FSMB or any question-bank company. The estimates come from a simple model with stated assumptions; see the methodology page.
