How to use the Step 1 score release date calculator

  1. Enter the date you took Step 1.
  2. If a school or program needs your result by a set date, add that deadline.
  3. Read the typical release date, the date to plan around, and any holiday notice.

Worked example. If you tested on Monday, October 5, 2026, scores would typically post by Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the last Wednesday release within four weeks. You would plan around Monday, November 30, 2026, eight weeks after that date.

What a Step 1 result looks like

Step 1 has been reported only as pass or fail since January 26, 2022. USMLE lists 196 as the passing standard on the legacy three-digit scale, which is no longer shown to examinees. A passing report shows only Pass; a failing report includes distance-from-passing and content-area feedback.

Because Step 1 gives no number, there is no score to compare with a cutoff. While you wait, the Step 1 pass probability calculator estimates your chance of passing from practice scores.

Planning around the Step 1 wait

The thing to plan is when a pass will be on record. If your school or a program needs it by a set date, add that date to the calculator: it shows whether your test date left the eight weeks USMLE advises.

Save a PDF of your report as soon as it is released. The report stays online for about a year; after that your result is available through an official transcript, which has a fee.

Release timing in short

Step 1 results are released on Wednesdays, typically within four weeks of your test date, and USMLE asks you to allow at least eight weeks. The holiday and delay rules are explained on the USMLE score release date calculator page.

Frequently asked questions

When do Step 1 scores come out?

Step 1 results are posted on Wednesdays, generally for examinees who tested in the four weeks before that Wednesday, and USMLE says they are typically available within four weeks of your test date. Enter your test date above to see your window.

Will my Step 1 result be a number?

No. Step 1 is reported as pass or fail. USMLE lists 196 as the passing standard on the legacy three-digit scale, which is no longer shown to examinees.

What will my Step 1 score report show?

A passing report shows only Pass. A failing report includes distance-from-passing and content-area feedback. These details are for your own planning and are not included on transcripts sent to programs.

What if a school or program needs my Step 1 result by a set date?

USMLE advises allowing at least eight weeks after your test date before any deadline that depends on your result. Add the deadline to the calculator to see whether your test date left enough time, and the latest test date that would have.

If I do not pass Step 1, how many times can I retake it?

You may take the same Step no more than three times within 12 months. A fourth attempt must be at least 12 months after your first attempt and at least six months after your most recent attempt. Incomplete attempts count toward these limits.

Where do I find my Step 1 result?

On the secure website of the organization that registered you (NBME through MyUSMLE, or FSMB). You get an email when the report is ready, and it stays online for about 365 days from that email.
