I am an international medical graduate planning to apply in the upcoming Match cycle. I have passed Step 1 and am scheduled for Step 2 CK in eight weeks, and I still need to sit for OET Medicine and complete my ECFMG Pathway application.
How early should OET and the Pathway application be submitted so ECFMG Certification is verified in time for residency application review?

Work backward from late September (when residency programs begin reviewing ERAS applications) with generous buffer time for credential verification and score release:
1. **OET Medicine (10 to 12 weeks before ERAS opens):** Register and sit for OET Medicine at least 2.5 to 3 months ahead of the application deadline. Computer-based OET results typically take about two weeks, and you must also authorize OET to release your score directly to ECFMG through the online portal.
2. **Pathway Application & Good Standing:** You do not have to wait for your Step 2 CK score to start the online Pathway application and arrange for your medical authority or licensing body to send a Certificate of Good Standing (Pathway 1) directly to ECFMG—primary-source verification of good standing often takes the longest.
3. **Medical School Credentials (Form 327A / Final Diploma & Transcript):** Make sure your medical school has uploaded and verified your final diploma and transcript early. Once Step 1, Step 2 CK, OET, Pathway approval, and credential verification are all complete, standard ECFMG Certificate issuance typically takes another 1 to 2 weeks.
Aiming to have all exam and OET scores reported by late July or early August removes massive stress in September.

If your medical school participates in electronic credential verification, ask your dean’s office registrar to confirm there are no pending transcript holds before your Step 2 CK score comes back.

Once you are ECFMG certified and have passing Step 1 and Step 2 CK scores, taking Step 3 before the rank order list deadline in February can also strengthen your candidacy and open H-1B visa options.

Steady parallel progress on OET and credentials while finishing Step 2 CK makes the summer timeline completely manageable.

Remember to double-check that your name spelling and date of birth on your OET profile match your ECFMG record character-for-character so electronic score matching does not stall.

Keep PDF copies of every submission receipt and verification email in a dedicated folder so you can track each requirement at a glance.

Starting the Certificate of Good Standing request early for Pathway 1 is crucial—medical councils can take 3 to 4 weeks to send verification directly to ECFMG, and the document expires after 90 days.
